When drivers look to improve their car's handling or lower its ride height, they face three fundamentally different approaches: keep the standard ride height and upgrade the damping (Bilstein B6), lower the car on springs with matched shortened dampers (Bilstein B12 or B8 + springs), or fit a full adjustable coilover kit (Bilstein B14). Each approach changes what the car does, what it costs, and what you give up in comfort and practicality. Option 2: Bilstein B12 — pro-kit springs with matched B6 dampers The B12 is a complete package: Bilstein-matched lowering springs plus shortened B6 dampers designed to work at the new ride height. This is the key point — the springs and dampers in a B12 kit are engineered as a matched pair. Fitting aftermarket springs with a standard-length damper (or vice versa) creates mismatched geometry that handles poorly and wears both components faster. The B12 makes sense when: The goal is a lower stance — typically 30–40 mm — with better handling The car is still used daily and daily usability matters Simplicity of the upgrade is important: one kit, no setup required, no geometry changes beyond a standard post-lowering alignment Budget matters: a B12 kit costs significantly less than a full coilover, and installation time is comparable What it does not do: let you adjust the ride height after fitting. Option 3: Bilstein B14 — full adjustable coilover kit The B14 is a complete coilover kit: spring and damper are integrated into a single unit with a threaded collar that allows ride height to be adjusted after fitting. Most B14 variants allow adjustment from approximately 20 mm to 80 mm below standard height, with the exact range depending on the vehicle application. The B14 makes sense when: The ride height needs to be adjustable — for example, a car that goes to shows and tracks at different heights, or a car where the ideal height is unknown until it is driven The driver wants corner-by-corner height adjustment to correct a pre-existing lean or geometry issue The car is used on track in addition to road use, and damper setup is part of the preparation The driver plans to run different wheel and tyre specifications that require different clearance settings What it costs you: compared to a B12 kit, the B14 is more expensive to purchase, takes more time to set up correctly (alignment after every height adjustment), and requires more periodic maintenance (thread lubrication, damper inspection). For the majority of road cars, the B12 kit is the right upgrade: it lowers the car, improves the handling, is properly matched, and requires no ongoing setup. The B6 is the right choice if lowering is not the goal. The B14 makes sense when height adjustability is a specific requirement — not just a nice-to-have. If you have not lowered a car before, start with a B12. The ride height is fixed but correct; the matched dampers handle it properly; and the result is predictable and reliable. Moving to a B14 later, with experience, is a reasonable progression. What about fitting B8 dampers with aftermarket springs? This approach (B8 damper + separate aftermarket springs) exists and some shops recommend it, but it carries a significant risk: unless the spring rate and the shortened damper are specifically matched, the combination may produce poor handling and accelerated wear. A wheel alignment is essential after any suspension height change — budget for it alongside the parts and labour cost. Frequently asked questions Can I fit Bilstein B6 dampers with lowering springs? Not recommended. The B6 is a standard-length damper. A car lowered 30–40 mm on aftermarket springs with a standard-length damper runs the damper near its compression limit, causing a harsh and potentially damaging ride. If you want to lower the car, use a matched kit (B12) or a coilover (B14), where the damper is designed for the new ride height. Will a B14 coilover ruin my daily driving comfort? At a sensible ride height — 20–30 mm below standard — a B14 is entirely usable as a daily driver. The spring rates in the B14 are stiffer than standard but not extremely so. At the lowest height settings, ground clearance and speed bump clearance will be reduced and the ride will be noticeably firmer. Set the height conservatively for daily use and you retain most of the comfort. What is the difference between a B12 and a B14? A B12 is a fixed-height kit: it lowers the car by a fixed amount determined by the spring length in the kit. A B14 is a coilover: the spring sits on a threaded collar that allows the ride height to be adjusted after fitting. The B14 costs more and requires more setup. If you do not need adjustable height, the B12 is the better choice for a daily road car. Do I need a wheel alignment after fitting a B6? Recommended but not strictly necessary if ride height is unchanged. The B6 drops in as a direct replacement at the same ride height and damper length as the OEM unit. An alignment check is good practice after any suspension work, but the car should handle predictably without one if the ride height has not changed. Is a B14 suitable for track use? The B14 is road-biased but track-capable. Its adjustability and stiffer springs make it a reasonable choice for occasional track use. For sustained track use — full track days, club motorsport — a dedicated track-specification damper with a higher spring rate and rebuilt servicing provision is a better long-term choice. The B14 can be used on track but it is engineered primarily for road use.
